Friend Adoptions is a website for people looking to adopt their next pet.
Jan. 2021 to June 2021
People wanted a trustworthy website to view potential animals to adopt.
Give people an option to see current pets available to adopt on a modern trustworthy looking website.
I did everything from research and design for the optimal UX/UI experience.
User research, wireframing, prototyping, accessibility,
I conducted online interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. For example, a primary user group identified through research was working adults and their families who wanted to find their next pet. This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Friend Adoptions potential adopters. Still, the analysis also revealed that trust was not the only factor limiting users from adopting online Other user problems included limited animals available for adoption. For example, many adoption agencies offered only cats instead of reptiles.
Typical adoption websites don’t have enough different animal options.
Too many outdated hard to see websites on mobile.
Not enough trust for some adoption places because of bad outdated websites with accessibility issues.
Jessica needs a adoption website with diverse options that she can also use on her phone.
Going over Jessica’s journey to understand her needs better to make a website with more diversity.

Feeling Objective | Excited about reptile options for adoption | Concerned about not enough reptiles | Happy to see unique animal options | Stressed because can't easily see all animals | Excitement at possibilities |
Improvement opportunities | Try to include reptiles as featured animals to adopt more | Expand this to other towns | Text about adoption aplication response times | Make sure not just to let anybody adopt | Include contact number on adoption page |
As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research.
A way for users to look at preferred animals
The low-fidelity prototype connected the primary user flow of building and ordering fancy food so the prototype could be used in a usability study with users. View the Friend Adoptions low-fidelity prototype.

There were a few actionable insights I came up with from the usability studies. One of these was adding a featured animal button within the website's home page process to help users save even more time.
The early designs allowed for some functionality, but I added the options to see the animals after the usability study. This change to the design gives users the ability to view available animals in the categories.
The hi-fi prototype followed the same user flow as the lo-fi prototype, and included the design changes made after the usability study. View the Friend Adoptions high-fidelity prototype.
I used colors that are accessible in the design.
I used font size that is an accessible font size.
I made clear buttons to use for accessibility.
The website made a user journey easier with more options for adopting a pet on mobile and pc. “I love this modern website that clearly wants to give so many different types of animals a home” Joe
While designing the Friend Adoptions, I learned that the first ideas for the website are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the website’s designs.
Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.
Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
